Like any muscle, grit gets stronger the more you train it.

  1. Visualize the Win – See yourself crossing the finish line before you take the first step. The mind will fight for what it has already seen as possible.
  2. Reality Check the Pain – Ask, “How bad is this really?” Most challenges shrink when we stop magnifying them.
  3. Stack Your Proof – Remember: You’ve survived 100% of your hardest days so far. That’s not luck, it’s evidence you’re built to endure.
  4. Seek Discomfort – Do hard things on purpose. Cold plunges, early alarms, brutal workouts, or venturing out and doing something uncomfortable. The body follows where the mind leads.
  5. Borrow Belief – Read, watch, and listen to gritty role models. David Goggins calls it “callousing the mind.” Jocko Willink’s mantra is simply: “Discipline equals freedom.” Study those that are gritty and relentless and take note to find way to replicate.

Final Thoughts

Grit isn’t loud or flashy, it’s quiet, stubborn resolve. It’s doing the work when no one’s watching and pushing forward when everyone else is retreating.

Once you start building your grit muscle, the momentum starts building and your inner desire to push harder grows. It almost becomes an addiction and conquering that next challenge provides a dopamine hit like any other. Get after it!
